Zambian Vice-President Guy Scott has become the first white ruler of an African nation in 20 years after the death of President Michael Sata. Sata died in a London hospital on Tuesday, October 28 and Scott was named interim leader on Wednesday, October 29. The VP will fill the position until presidential elections can be held 90 days from now in accordance with the country’s constitution. Defence Minister Edgar Lungu said: "Dr. Scott will act as president of the Republic of Zambia until the country goes for a presidential by-election." The interim ruler also confirmed his appointment and announced the beginning of the mourning period for the late president. Zambian President-elect Edgar Lungu was on Tuesday inaugurated for his five year mandated in office during a grand ceremony held in Lusaka, the country's capital. Lungu, who was declared winner of last month's tightly contested elections, was inaugurated during the ceremony held at the packed National Heroes Stadium. He was inaugurated alongside Vice-President Inonge Wina who was his running mate in the August 11 polls. The ceremony, witnessed by presidents from the region such as Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and Botswana's Ian Nkhama as well as representatives of other countries, saw a huge number of people turning up to witness the inauguration.
On the 19th of July 2007, the Cancer Diseases Hospital opened in Lusaka, Zambia. Ten years on, over 16 000 people have been diagnosed and treated at the hospital. The IAEA, which supports the use of radiation medicine in its Member States, has assisted the hospital since planning began in 2002. DA leader Mmusi Maimane is defiant, saying he will return to Zambia at the next court appearance of the opposition leader Haikande Hichilema on the 12th of June. Maimane was barred from entering the country on Thursday. He says he was manhandled by officers inside the aircraft at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka. The Zambian, government defended its decision to deny Maimane entry, accusing him of attempting to undermine his courts. It is believed that this will help Zambian economy to resolve the challenges imposed upon the economy by low quality of goods and services. Edgar Lungu has been sworn in as Zambia’s sixth president, following a closely fought election. Zambians voted Tuesday for a successor to President Michael Sata who died in October of last year. The new leader will take the helm of the copper-rich country for the remainder of Sata’s term before the country returns to the polls in September 2016.
